As a SF-based breaks-loving producer, I'm curious where people think the music is headed?

Drum-and-bass was my first breaks-love (after hip-hop of course) and when I moved to SF in 1997 the DNB scene was taking off... Then things chilled out post-dot-com and nu-skool had it's moment in the sun... I turned down the tempo a bit and carried on...

Now what? What's hot in your neck of the woods? What labels/producers are making the dog's bollocks (to borrow a brit phrase)? Where is da music going??

We just started a new weekly breaks night in the Phoenix, AZ area. This Tuesday (02/27) will be our second night. We tripled the bar's income on our first night 2 weeks ago, and we plan on keeping that happening.

If any of you kind folks are in the Phoenix Metro area (Tempe, near ASU) on a Tuesday, please drop in and say hello. If you want to spin some breaks, let me know and we'll sort out the details. Right now we aren't getting paid (other than in what we can drink), but when we prove ourselves (and the bar starts making decent money) we'll have some cash to play with.

So yeah, if you or your friends are coming through Phoenix on a Tuesday, shoot me a line!

Maybe I'm out of the loop but it seems to me most of the breaks releases lately are going the way of the over-compressed over-glitched sound. It's been hard to find those gems suitable for us more layered-melody minded folk.
One track I did pick up this week was Dirty Fours - Machines (Broken Machine Mix) - on one of the Nubreed Y4K samplers. Nice dreamy one.

JODY'S BIO :: Jody Wisternoff is something of a young but seasoned veteran, with an impressive career that spans 16 years to date. Breaking through to the finals of the DMC hiphop championships in 1986 he received national notoriety as well as a major deal and heat from such old school style mags as The Face, Hip Hop Connection, and I.D. whilst still a teenager, and this many years before becoming half of pioneering dance act Way Out West alongside Nick Warren. By then Jody's DJ style had become predominantly four to the floor, and as a result residencies at London's Club UK and Bristol's Lakota were secured. As Way Out West became more established DJ work went from nationwide to international. Three mix comps, a handful of hits,a constant gigging schedule, WOW production, remixing, live shows have been expertly juggled with his DJing schedule. Now touring consistently as Way Out West Dj Set ,as well as under his own moniker you will find him at the cutting edge of electronic housemusic , embracing exciting fresh sounds, shunning the populist/lowest common denominator floor fodder. Jody's passion for music will always keep him ahead of the game

“Damian Lazarus plays the best underground records in the world" (DJ Magazine)

“Time to blow away the mediocrity. Time to bury the has-beens that have gripped the dance world. Damian Lazarus is leading the change. He is one of a small number of DJ’s delivering a fresh sonic surge of forward thinking music and new dancefloor perspectives. Best described as dirty and deep, this is electro house and much more besides. This is a Rebel sound designed for lovers of late night madness, future dance floor classics and cutting edge new ideas. Its time has come.

Damian’s DJing antics have taken him around the globe to some of the best underground parties. Always a lover of 'proper' music and not a fan of mainstream music machines, Damian Lazarus is a believer in giving people something exciting, special and different. For that he should be applauded. It’s time to Rebel! Raveos Extremos!”

San Francisco’s best Halloween party is back for another year of madness. This year, we’re kicking it up another notch and bringing New York based Scarlett Etienne in on the fun!

As usual, no cover, and maybe we won’t kick you out if you’re not in costume, but what fun would that be? Get yourself an outfit and join the party. Don’t be that guy or girl who says “Damn, I wish I had dressed up.” Be the one who says, “Damn! I got the best outfit here!” Let’s see some crazy costumes!!

So, who is Scarlett Etienne? If you haven’t heard of Scarlett by now, then you don’t know what you’ve been missing. She’s toured all over the world, from Asia to Ibiza to all over the United States, while calling New York home. When we heard Scarlett would be in town, we jumped at the chance to bring her to FunkyCozy, and we know you’ll be as excited as we are by the time Saturday rolls around.

From her website:

Diversity is the heart of Scarlett’s sound. Her style can be described as electro-progressive with a funky and melodic edge. At only 23 years of age, Scarlett has acquired a unique, cultured appreciation and understanding of dance music and continues to make her impact on the underground house scene on a global level. While not working hard on the road, she is working diligently at home in her Pro-Tools project studio, continuing her quest to find expression through innovative new sounds.

For you curious peeps, you can listen to a set of Scarlett’s right here and find more information about her on her website at http://www.scarlettetienne.com

FunkyCozy @ Anu SF Sat 27th 9pm-2am - International Invasion!!!

We have a super line up coming in from all parts of the globe for this month’s FunkyCozy on Saturday, August 27th. Joining us are Sasha Navarro (PlayCo Music), Clare Large (IntelligentAudio.com/Globalscape.ca) and Domingo Castillo. We’ll cover all bases from sweet funky downtempo to electro breaks and banging house. We'll be kicking things off early @ 9pm with some promo CDs and free champagne to get you in the mood for the mayhem to come (add to this the rumor that Tim McCormack had to buy a new suitcase in London for all the new records he bought, and we should have a great night!).

Dirty drum patterns, funky basslines and trippy-techy soundscapes are a few words that describe Sasha Navarro’s style. Sasha has mesmerized audiences all over the world alongside some of the top talent in the industry such as Lee Burridge, Jimmy Van M., Marco, Lenzi, and Kazell. She helped form Play Co. with her long time friends and spinning mates, Hac Le, Tyrel Williams, and Caliendo, where they are nurturing the local underground scene in Chicago as well as working on musical productions. Currently acting as the PA to DJ legend Damien Lazarus of Cross Town Rebels in the UK - expect some very sneaky unreleased and original tracks.

Clare Thwaite aka Clare Large is currently on a North American tour. With an array of styles she is equally as comfortable playing downtempo as she is electro and house. She has played all over the UK and Ibiza and is now bringing her unique style to SF.

Domingo Castillo is one of the best hidden downtempo producers around. Coming in from Miami as a last minute addition to the lineup we had to have him come lay down some tunes!

Be sure to get there early, ‘cause trust us when we say the 27th will be another one of those “one for the ages” nights!

Second, our favorite "unofficial" resident, Sattva, is making his third FunkyCozy appearance. Sattva is coming in from Miami to join residents Jonathan Beech, Sinukus and Tim McCormack as we guide you through a mix of downtempo, minimal techno, breakbeats and any other genre we feel like dropping. Many of you have heard the story before, but for those who haven't, the FunkyCozy boys were in Miami last year and randomly walked into a bar where Sattva was spinning. After we picked our jaws up off the floor later that night, plans were quickly made to get Sattva out to San Francisco.

Following his first visit to FunkyCozy, Sattva quickly became a sought after DJ on the local scene, spinning at Qool, doing New Year's Eve at 1015 Folsom, and even coming in for Love Parade last year. The boy's got talent, folks, and he is raring to show you what goodies he's added to his collection. Don't miss it!

Come early as Sinukus, Tim and Sattva will begin the night with a great hour of downtempo to get you grooving. Free champagne from 9 PM to 10 PM.

Anu is at 43 Sixth St. between Market and Mission. No cover!!!!

We've had Hoj on our short list for about a year now, and we're finally able to make it happen. Hoj has had a very busy year, touring in Brazil and playing parties all over San Francisco like Qool and Opel. After spending the spring refining his sound, he's ready to blow you away this Saturday! So join us at Anu on 6th and mission on Saturday, May 28th, from 9 PM - 2 AM. Free champagne from 9 PM to 10 PM, so get there early. We'll warm you up with bubbly and some nice downtempo, then build on up to an eclectic combo of house, tech house, breakbeats, progressive, and anything else you can think of, as long as it makes you move. Hoj, Jonathan Beech, Sinukus, and Tim McCormack. Need we say more? Be there, peeps.
Erik Stein, aka Wavewhore, has experimented with audio waveforms and styles of electronic music since the early nineties. His early years were spent playing metal guitar in a host of bar bands which toured the New York City area. In 1991, Well Primed records released 'The Thorazine Stretch Factor', a compilation which featured his first dive into the realm of electronic dance music titled ‘Voodoo’. In 2001, Wavewhore founded Audio Tactics, an audio production house dedicated to styles of electronic music such as breakbeat and contemporary dub. The following year, Wavewhore’s ‘Bulletproof’, a drum and bass track, was featured in a film by Julie Covello titled ‘Prohibited Beatz’ documenting the New York drum and bass scene. As a DJ, Wavewhore can be found delivering high energy breakbeat or chilled out dub sets at various venues in his home base of New York City and he currently maintains a residency called ‘Unbreakable’ at the award winning Sullivan Room in Manhattan. His DJ skills have been featured on numerous radio shows such as BreaksFM and upcoming shows include 92.3 K-Rock FM, Proton Radio and an artist feature on www.BijouBreaks.com.

‘Breakin The Law’ is his first single for Electrofly and takes the label down a more funky dance floor friendly route… jump up beats & bass stylleee!
Support from Elite Force, Jay Cunning, The Autobots, Chris Fortier, Jonathan Lisle, Bill Vega & Soto…

“A mighty tune!” Elite Force on the 40,000 Watts Remix

"I'll try and play it on the radio (my kiss100 show) this week" Tayo

"That demo is wicked... All the bulbs that I ever needed to put out - you did it for me. I owe you one… Yeah, Breakin’ The Law is really good shit mate!" Jez of The Autobots

"Loving it every time I play it!" Bill Vega

“A new release from Electrofly is always welcome; a label who seem to have found themselves in that kind of progressive bracket; the kind of breaks that I imagine Sasha or Digweed might play, but definitely not Mechanoise. They have put out some really interesting releases and occasionally some that have been, how shall we put this, a little ‘light’. Anyway, this is not one of those and is actually one of their most playable, dancefloor friendly releases to date. It’s strangely reminiscent of really good, solid house music from the mid 90’s and brings a warm feeling with it. It’s pretty simple really; a tight little groove which keeps repeating, warm synthy sounds are added to the mix following variations of the same pattern and it just keeps building and subtly changing. The 40,000 watts mix is the one that’s aimed more firmly at the floor. It’s a bit more stripped down but with extra kick and attitude in the bass and drums. Simple but really effective tracks that are instantly accessible. Solid.” Soto (M8 Magazine review)
Saturday.April 9

Many moons ago – while trippin’ out on the grains of sand on
Future Funk Squad (aka glen nicholls) started producing when he was just 15. A few years later in 1997, Glen had his first release under the name "Instinct" on a top D'n'B label "Moving Shadow". The Future Funk Squad was born in 1999 when Glen accidentally made a jungle track too slow. The track was picked up by DJ Hyper and Lee Burridge and Future Funk Squad has continued to put out a steady stream of breakbeat stormers ever since. He has remixed over 40 tracks including the likes of Stanton Warriors, Koma+Bones and Moloko. He's DJ'd for over 10 years and has been working on his newest record label, En:Vision, with tracks by Madam Breaks, Transformer Man and more to come.

This year, Glen plans to release his debut album "Audio Damage." He's also responsible for the opening title track on EA Sports' FIFA 2005 football game.

I have this track that's been kicking around for a few months and at one point (maybe still, dunno) Jonathan Lisle (of M-Theory/Bedrock Breaks fame) said he was very interested in signing it. He's promised to call me about it for several months now though, and has seemed to drop off the face of the earth, so I'm looking for some other ideas of where you think it might fit in.

Cheers.

Alright kids - I need to buy some new vinyl, and really don't have spare $$, so I did my bi-monthly filtration and came up with a pile of stuff for sale. It really spans the gamut of breaks - prog., nuskool, electro, tech, etc. Everything is in pretty good condition, even the older titles. If you only want one or two, I'm charging a bit higher - but for anyone who buys in bulk, I'll cut deals. Some rare shit in here also, so those titles might be higher - but for the most part it'll be $5 a record, price breaks at quantity. If you have questions - ask!!!! I'm in the East Bay for those who want to know...if you aren't in the Bay Area, I will send records, but you will be charged extra for postage/packing materials.
